Today I decided to subscribe to Poetryarchive.org and clicked on Children's poems. A wonderful poem What's in a Name popped up and a fantastic reading by the author,John Agard. He is an Afro-Guyanese playwright, poet and children's author. In 2012 he was selected for the Queen's gold Medal for poetry and in 2021 he was awarded Book Trust's Lifetime Achievement Award.
I had to remind myself who Rumpelstiltskin was. Can you remember? The miller, in one of those grim Grimm fairy tales, got into a pickle when he claimed to the king that his daughter could spin straw into gold. The king promptly locked her in a tower and commanded her to spin. Rumpel was the imp who could change straw into gold but he had a few stipulations to make before he did so....
Follow links below to hear the author reading his poem and for more info on Rumpel.
